In the first step of preparing the thesis, we hold a personal or online meeting with the student, during which the student explains the reasons for and the motivations behind their choice of topic. I expect independent, self-initiated work from students who wish to write their thesis under my supervision. This is part of the thesis-writing process itself, so I do not carry it out myself — at most, I offer feedback on it.
In my understanding, preparing a thesis is independent work; I can take on the role of supervisor only if the student is capable of independent work, of raising their own problem, and of solving it with the teacher’s guidance (rather than instruction).
I also consider it important to emphasise that the work produced as a result of the thesis-writing process is the student’s own individual intellectual product, one that, in an ideal case, they can be proud of; in a less ideal case, they may experience the opposite.
I expect students who wish to write their thesis under my supervision to provide a detailed work plan for preparing the thesis (tasks, deadlines, the deliverables of each sub-task, etc.)
Experience shows that statistical data processing can be the weakest link in a thesis. If a student has difficulties in this area, it is more advisable to use other methodological tools, or to choose a topic that does not require, or requires less, mathematical-statistical proficiency.
General, thorough methodological proficiency naturally applies not only to quantitative but also to qualitative methodological knowledge.
For my thesis students, materials to help review research methodology knowledge are available on a separate LMS platform. With the help of this platform — again assuming independent work — the more important elements of the material taught at the faculty can be reviewed.
I ask my students to observe the above (and, of course, the relevant provisions of the TVSZ [Academic and Examination Regulations]), as well as the rules of ELTE – (ELTE Organisational and Operational Regulations, Volume II, Student Requirement System).
In addition to the above, meeting the deadlines set in your own work plan is also essential for preparing a thesis of adequate quality!
(So that thesis-writing remains a useful passion, rather than becoming a harmful affliction.)
