Course objective:
The course provides an economics-based insight into labour-market and disability-related expertise, as well as into the elements of HR management as they appear in corporate practice. On the basis of empirically grounded labour-market analyses, students are introduced to the economic frameworks of the employment of people with disabilities, primarily through a review of the findings of organisational research conducted in the corporate sector. The course provides insight into the conceptual usage of corporate human resource managers, consistently seeking to highlight the intersections of these different bodies of knowledge and to give effect to a practice-oriented approach.
Learning outcomes and competences:
Knowledge:
- The student becomes acquainted with the most important theories, basic concepts, and processes relating to the employment of persons with altered work capacity, and has comprehensive knowledge of general and contemporary special education.
- The student has knowledge of the specific possibilities for adapting sociological and economic principles to special education, and is informed about contemporary research findings.
Skills:
- The student is able to apply their sociological knowledge adaptively, in a manner appropriate to a given disability group.
- The student is able to identify social processes and, within these, particularly the newer phenomena and challenges of the educational environment, to select methods that reflect on these, and to apply new interventions.
Attitude:
- The student strives to develop self- and peer-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-reflexivity, including in their work as an educator.
- The student is aware of the educational and pedagogical goals of the (special) education of persons with disabilities and represents these with commitment. They see the social processes and approaches relating to people with disabilities in their broader context, and through this reflect on present-day problems.
Autonomy and responsibility:
- Both the topic itself and the course’s overall approach to the labour-market employment of persons with altered work capacity strengthen students’ autonomy and their sense of responsibility toward the people concerned.
Course content:
The course seeks to broaden students’ perspective from the standpoint of corporate practice, highlighting the HR management considerations that arise on the open labour market. During the semester, students gain practical knowledge of the employment of persons with altered work capacity by carrying out an independent research project.
Main content and thematic units:
- The axioms of sociology and economics, as well as related research-methodological and ethical questions.
- Getting to know our social and work environment.
- The formation and functions of group norms; norms and behaviour; the process of social influence, minority influence.
Assessment and grading system:
The semester concludes with a colloquium (oral examination). The end-of-semester examination may be replaced by a mini-research project carried out during the semester, which students present in the form of an independent presentation and for which they answer any professional questions that arise. The research topic must be approved in advance. Approval takes place according to the deadline set in the university’s Moodle system.
